Community College: The Community College Section seeks to further the interests of community colleges, junior colleges, vocational/technical schools, two-year programs, and law enforcement and correctional academies.
Corrections: The Corrections Section encourages research and theory development relating to community and institutional corrections, as well as the development of relationships between practitioners, scholars and researchers. Please visit www.acjscorrections.org for more information.
Critical Criminology: The Critical Criminology Section promotes empirical and theoretical work on the ways in which ethnic/racial, class, and gender inequality contribute to crime and social control. The Section on Critical Criminology participates in publishing the peer-reviewed periodical, Critical Criminology: An International Journal, and the newsletter, The Critical Criminologist. Additionally, the Section shares a website, www.critcrim.org, that regularly features announcements, updates, discussion forums, and other matters of interest for the Section's members.
International: The International Section promotes international information exchange, criminal justice research, curriculum development, and general international networking. The Section selects the recipient for the G.O.W. Mueller Award, which is given annually to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the field of international/comparative criminal justice. Recipients have been, Dorothy Bracey, Ian McKenzie, Jeremy Travis, and Elmar Weitekamp. Members are kept current with Section activities via our own listserv. Juvenile Justice: The Juvenile Justice Section promotes communication between academics and practitioners as well as research and theory in the area.
Law and Public Policy: The Law and Public Policy Section seeks to raise the awareness of ACJS members to law and policy concerns relevant to criminal justice issues. The objective of the section is to support members of ACJS with research, curriculum development, and networking. Members are encouraged to offer their academic findings to all levels of governments for law and policy development.
Minorities and Women: The Minorities and Women Section of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences is the section for people who are interested in issues within criminal justice that are pertinent to underrepresented minorities and women. Our goal is to further the development of research, theory and teaching practices on issues relevant to minorities and women in criminal justice. The Minorities and Women Section is one of the vehicles for bringing life to the Academy's policy of diversity and inclusion. Our section website and e-mail list-serve serves as a clearinghouse for information and an exchange of ideas among section members. Police: The Police Section strives to build networks among police practitioners, researchers and educators.
Restorative and Community Justice: The Restorative and Community Justice Section (Section) shall be a constituent unit of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (Academy) and shall function in accordance with the Constitution and By-laws and policies of the Academy. The mission of the organization is to provide a professional association academics, educators, justice agency practitioners, victim advocates, victim services interested in developing restorative and community justice theory; conduct policy relevant research on restorative and community justice practices; and educate individuals, organizations, institutions, and governmental entities about restorative and community justice principles and practices. The purposes of the section are:
• Cultivate professional development of those involved in restorative and community justice research, education and practice.
• Promote discussion, research and dissemination which gives focus, direction and integration of fields related to restorative and community justice education and practices.
• Provide opportunities for dialogue and encouragement for academics and practitioners interested in restorative and community justice related principles.
• Expose members to interdisciplinary issues related to our mission.
• Advance cross-cultural and international restorative and community justice research, education and practice.
• Develop essential knowledge, attitude and skill competencies for educators, practitioners and researchers working in the field of restorative and community justice.
• Promote on-going education and professional development of members in the fields of restorative and community justice.
• Integrate evidence based practices and models into the field and promote evaluation, research and policy.
Security and Crime Prevention: The primary mission of the Security and Crime Prevention Section is to promote the professional growth and development of its members through service and education to the academic and practical field of security. By providing the necessary resources, organizational programs, workshops and activities, the Section strives to ensure that its members remain on the cutting edge of technology, their discipline, and pedagogical advances.
Membership in the ACJS Section in Security and Crime Prevention brings with it many benefits and privileges. With its diverse membership of educators, specialists in security, researchers, and other criminal justice professionals, the Section is uniquely situated to bring all the various actors to the table to address today's most pressing security and crime prevention issues.
Members receive:
- The Journal of Protection Science, a yearly publication that provides a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach to the field of protection sciences that includes academically-grounded scholarship aimed at advancing the field of protection sciences at both the practical and applied levels. (This is a new journal which is currently in development.)
- An opportunity to participate in a meaningful and prestigious awards program.
- Priority announcements about conferences and innovations in the field of security and crime prevention. Whenever possible efforts are made to obtain registration and course materials offered at reduced rates to Section members.

- An opportunity to provide leadership in the field through participation on committees and special projects. Committees are the lifeblood of the Section. They offer members the best opportunity for direct involvement in Section activities--new Journal, website, awards, etc. Networking through committee participation is an excellent way to exchange information with colleagues regarding the latest developments facing security and crime prevention practice issues.
