Poster Session FAQ

Poster Session FAQ

  1. What is a poster session?

A poster session consists of two components.  First, it is a visual display of research and secondly, it involves interaction with the audience.  The poster is usually made using PowerPoint slides or some other computer software.  Then the slides are printed and placed on a poster board.  The visual display includes text, tables, graphs etc.  Some people choose to have their posters printed professionally or laminated; this is a personal preference but is not required.  The second component of the poster session requires that the author(s) interact with the audience during the allotted session time.  Conference participants browse the displayed posters and have an opportunity to inquire about the research.

  2. What do I do if I want to present a poster?

Anyone interested in presenting a poster may do so by submitting the appropriate material found in the Call for Presentations by the appropriate deadline.

  3. Can I present more than one poster at the conference?

No, however you may be a co-author of a poster with another co-author agreeing to present the poster.

  4. Do I have to be present at the poster session?

Yes, all poster presenters are required to attend the session.  If there is more than one author, only one person needs to be present.  Likewise, it is possible to alternate with your coauthor(s).

  5. What if I have to cancel my poster session because I can’t attend the conference?

If your poster is accepted, we will expect someone to be present to present it.  Please plan ahead and if possible have a backup person who can present the poster on your behalf.

  6. How long is the poster session?

The poster session will last 90 minutes with time to assemble and dismantled the poster sessions not counted in this time frame. During this time, the presenter will be available to entertain informal questions and discussions about the research.

  7. Where will the poster session take place?

The poster session location will be listed in the conference program along with dates and times.  A preliminary program will be posted to the ACJS website in January.

  8. Will there be time to set up my poster before the session starts?

Yes, poster presenters will have approximately 30 minutes before the session to set up the posters unless hotel arrangements allow for them to be put out in advance of the session, and approximately 30 minutes after the session to disassemble the posters.  If hotel arrangements will allow, AJCS prefers to have posters set up a day in advance of the poster session so that attendees will have more time to see the posters.  In this event, please display your poster on the poster boards provided as soon as they are available.  ACJS will move the posters to the session area.  You should then disassemble your poster at the end of the poster session.

  9. When do I take my poster down?

All posters can be removed immediately after the poster session time has ended.

  10. Will I be able to put my poster together while at the conference?

While we understand that traveling with a constructed poster can be difficult, we will not have the facilities or materials available to assist in poster construction.  Please be prepared to either bring with you or purchase at a local store any materials you think will be necessary to make your poster. The conference will provide a 4’x8’display board to post your poster.  Likewise, if your poster requires any electrical or technical equipment, you will need to make the necessary arrangements for each.

  11. What are the components of the poster layout?

The poster includes a title, your name, affiliation, abstract, key points, graphics, and references.  See below for pictures of some posters from the 2005 ACJS meeting.

  12. What size should my poster be?

Poster sizes vary.  It is recommended that your poster not exceed 44 x 70.

  13. Do I need handouts?

Handouts are optional.  However, you must be prepared to hand them out during the session because there is no table available to display them.
